PSV Eindhoven has landed Lutsharel Geertruida on a season-long loan from RB Leipzig, bringing the 26-year-old Dutch defender back to the Eredivisie after a two-year absence. The deal, completed around August 20-21, includes a non-obligatory purchase option, giving PSV a trial run before deciding whether to make the move permanent.
Geertruida made his debut for PSV on Sunday, August 23, just days after the ink dried on his loan agreement.
The deal structure
PSV is paying approximately €6 million for the loan period, a figure that primarily covers Geertruida’s salary. The purchase option sits somewhere between €12.5 million and €15 million. For context, RB Leipzig originally signed Geertruida from Feyenoord in 2024 for a reported €20 million. So if PSV pulls the trigger on a permanent deal, they’d be getting him at a meaningful discount to what Leipzig paid.
A well-traveled defender comes home
Geertruida was born on July 18, 2000. He came through Feyenoord’s academy and established himself as a first-team regular, racking up 144 Eredivisie appearances between 2017 and 2024. His versatility was always the calling card. Geertruida’s primary position is right-back, but he’s equally comfortable slotting into centre-back or dropping into a defensive midfield role.
Leipzig came calling in 2024 with a €20 million bid. By the 2025-26 season, he was loaned out to Sunderland in England, where he made 28 Premier League appearances.
Now he’s back in Dutch football, wearing the number 2 shirt at PSV. Geertruida was careful to address that distinction in his public statements, stressing that his decision to join PSV was not a move against Feyenoord.
Why PSV and why now
PSV, facing defensive challenges due to Jerdy Schouten’s long-term injury, valued Geertruida’s extensive experience in the Dutch top flight, his exposure to Champions League football, and his 21 caps for the Netherlands. His ability to play multiple defensive roles gives coach Peter Bosz options that most single-position signings simply can’t offer.
For Leipzig, the loan represents pragmatic squad management. Rather than keeping a player who clearly isn’t in their first-choice plans and paying his full wages, they’ve offloaded a significant portion of his salary to PSV while retaining ownership. If Geertruida has a stellar season in Eindhoven, the purchase option gets exercised and Leipzig recoup between €12.5 million and €15 million.
