Radev confirms drone explosion in Bulgaria’s airspace near critical gas infrastructure

A large unidentified drone crossed into Bulgarian airspace from Romania and exploded near the Kardam border crossing on August 8, landing in a sunflower field roughly 100 to 200 meters inside Bulgarian territory. Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed no casualties resulted from the detonation, but the proximity to critical energy infrastructure has set off alarm bells across southeastern Europe.

The explosion occurred at approximately 5 a.m. local time. The drone came down just 1 km from the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline compressor station and about 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station.

What we know about the drone

Radev described the unmanned aerial vehicle as large, with significant explosive potential.

Bulgarian authorities have indicated the drone was not detected while transiting Romanian airspace before it crossed the border.

No group or state has claimed responsibility for the incident. The origin of the drone, its flight path beyond the Romania-Bulgaria crossing point, and the nature of the explosive payload all remain under investigation.

The infrastructure question

The Trans-Balkan pipeline historically carried Russian natural gas through Ukraine, Romania, and Bulgaria to Turkey and onward to southern Europe. In recent years, it has been repurposed to facilitate non-Russian gas supplies such as Azerbaijani gas and liquefied natural gas routed through Greece, with extensions to Greece and North Macedonia. The physical infrastructure, including compressor stations that maintain pressure along the line, remains strategically important.

Bulgaria’s response

Following the explosion, Bulgarian authorities moved to increase air defense measures along the country’s borders.

The fact that the drone entered from Romania without being detected there adds a layer of diplomatic complexity. Both countries are NATO allies, and Romania has not yet issued a detailed public statement regarding why the drone was not picked up on its radar systems.
