Real Madrid weighing Arda Güler contract extension until 2031

Real Madrid are preparing to tie down one of European football’s most exciting young talents for the better part of a decade. Arda Güler, the 21-year-old Turkish midfielder who arrived from Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2023, is expected to sign a contract extension that would keep him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2031.

His current deal runs through June 30, 2029. The extension being discussed would add two further years, pushing his commitment to the club well into his late twenties.

From injury struggles to untouchable status

Güler joined the club in a deal worth €20 million up front, with potential add-ons of up to €10 million, but injuries derailed his debut season before he made his first competitive appearance in January 2024.

Under manager Xabi Alonso, Güler cemented himself as a regular starter, contributing to Real Madrid’s success in both La Liga and the Champions League. Real Madrid now considers him non-transferable.

Chelsea are said to have tabled offers exceeding €100 million for the midfielder. Real Madrid has shown no interest in selling.

The contract terms on the table

The proposed extension would see Güler’s annual net salary rise from approximately €2.6 million to around €4.5 million, contingent on continued form and regular starting appearances rather than being guaranteed from day one.

Transfermarkt currently estimates his value at €90 million, with an estimated transfer value range sitting between €73 million and €89 million, compared to the original €20 million acquisition fee.

Fenerbahçe hold a 20% sell-on clause from the original 2023 transfer. If Real Madrid ever did sell Güler above his purchase price, the Istanbul club would be entitled to a fifth of the profit.

What this means for the broader transfer market

A contract running to 2031 substantially raises the exit cost for any club attempting to pry Güler away in the years ahead. Chelsea’s reported nine-figure bids suggest some clubs are willing to pay a premium regardless.

Born February 25, 2005, Güler will be 26 when the proposed 2031 contract expires.
