Romelu Lukaku agrees to join Fenerbahçe, transfer fee talks ongoing

Romelu Lukaku, the 33-year-old Belgian striker, has agreed personal terms with Turkish Süper Lig side Fenerbahçe. The transfer will add an eleventh senior club to his résumé if the two sides can close a gap on the transfer fee.

As of August 8, 2026, Lukaku has reached an agreement in principle on a contract that would run until 2028, with an option to extend through 2029. Now it’s Napoli and Fenerbahçe’s turn to figure out the transfer fee.

The price gap

Napoli has set an asking price of approximately €10 million for a player entering the final year of his contract. A significant chunk of it, around 40%, would flow directly to Chelsea as part of a sell-on clause baked into Lukaku’s 2024 transfer to Naples.

Fenerbahçe’s initial offers are expected to land in the €5–6 million range, roughly half of what the Italian side is demanding.

Fenerbahçe has been circling this deal since January 2026. For Napoli, trimming Lukaku’s wages — currently around €8–11 million gross annually — from the payroll is a key motivation alongside the transfer fee, as the club is in the middle of a broader restructuring effort.

A career of constant motion

Lukaku’s career trajectory spans Anderlecht, Chelsea, West Brom on loan, Everton on loan then permanently, Manchester United, Inter Milan, back to Chelsea, Roma on loan, Inter again on loan, and Napoli — ten clubs in a senior career. If the Fenerbahçe deal closes, he’ll hit eleven.

The Belgian is his country’s all-time leading goalscorer. He joined Napoli permanently in August 2024 on a contract running through June 2027 and quickly became a central figure in their attack.

Why Fenerbahçe, and why now

Lukaku wasn’t short of alternatives. Atlanta United from Major League Soccer expressed interest, as did several clubs from Saudi Arabia. That Lukaku chose Fenerbahçe over those alternatives suggests the move is about more than just money.

The Chelsea sell-on clause means Chelsea will pocket roughly €4 million if Napoli gets its full €10 million asking price.
