Shiba Inu pulled off something unusual this weekend: a 40% rally that might not immediately collapse on itself. SHIB hit an intraday peak of $0.00000582 on July 26, pushing its market cap to roughly $3.12 billion and adding about $1 billion in a single day.
The reason this particular spike is worth paying attention to, rather than filing under “meme coin does meme coin things,” comes down to what drove it. Spot inflows, not leverage.
The numbers behind the move
According to CoinGlass data, positive net spot inflows topped $5 million on Saturday. That’s the largest single-day figure in more than nine months.
Trading volume surged to $717 million, an increase of up to 1,245% from prior levels.
South Korean exchange Upbit was a major contributor, reporting nearly $69 million in SHIB/KRW trading volume.
The rally vaulted SHIB to the 25th largest digital asset by market capitalization.
Why spot flows matter more than you think
Analysts noted that spot flows significantly outpaced derivatives activity during the move. That distinction matters because spot purchases represent actual demand. Someone is buying SHIB and holding it in their wallet, not just placing a leveraged bet that the price will go up in the next four hours.
The rally came after several months of downward price action for SHIB, a period of consolidation that appears to have shaken out weak hands.
What this means for investors
The $3.12 billion market cap puts SHIB back in a range where it attracts meaningful attention from both retail and potentially institutional players.
For traders weighing positions, the key metric to watch going forward is whether spot inflows maintain their pace relative to derivatives activity. If the ratio holds or improves, it suggests genuine accumulation rather than speculative froth. If derivatives volume starts to overtake spot, the foundation of this rally weakens considerably.
