SpaceX has filed for an IPO targeting a valuation between $1.75 trillion and $2 trillion. The company is seeking to raise approximately $75 billion in the process.
The numbers behind the hype
Prediction markets have assigned a greater than 98% probability that SpaceX’s IPO will close with a market cap above $1 trillion.
On-chain derivatives markets have reached implied valuations as high as $2.5 trillion as anticipation builds. SpaceX has become a key player in on-chain synthetic equity markets, with significant engagement from traders positioning ahead of the public listing.
The primary engine behind these valuations is Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite broadband business. Starlink has rapidly scaled into a global internet service provider beaming connectivity from low-Earth orbit, serving customers in remote areas, on aircraft, and aboard maritime vessels.
The space data center debate
SpaceX’s roadmap apparently includes plans for space-based data centers. Critics have pointed out that data traveling to and from orbit introduces latency that matters for AI training, real-time financial transactions, and cloud gaming, all of which demand millisecond-level response times.
Space-based infrastructure also faces regulatory challenges including international space law, spectrum allocation, data sovereignty rules, and export controls.
What this means for investors
Starlink has no comparable competitor in satellite constellation scale, and the barriers to entry include the launch capability itself. The stretch to $1.75 trillion or $2 trillion requires investors to underwrite space-based data centers that would need to overcome latency limitations and regulatory frameworks that don’t yet exist.
For crypto-native investors engaging with SpaceX through on-chain synthetic equity markets, the $2.5 trillion implied valuations in derivative markets suggest some traders may be pricing in perfection. Amazon’s Project Kuiper is building its own satellite broadband constellation, and AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud compete in the data center market where SpaceX has no established position.
