SpaceX plans Starship’s first orbital flight next week

After 13 test flights that never left the neighborhood, Starship is finally aiming for the real thing. SpaceX has targeted no earlier than September 22 for Flight 14, the first attempt to put its fully integrated Starship vehicle into a stable low Earth orbit.

The mission profile calls for the upper stage, known simply as Ship, to reach an altitude of roughly 275 kilometers, complete approximately six orbits, and spend close to 10 hours in space before a controlled splashdown in the Pacific Ocean west of Chile.

What Flight 14 actually involves

The launch window opens at approximately 7:15 a.m. Central Time, or 12:15 UTC, and runs for 75 minutes. SpaceX will fly from its Starbase facility in South Texas, the same site that has hosted every prior integrated test flight.

Beyond the orbital milestone itself, Flight 14 carries a real commercial payload: 26 Starlink V3 satellites. These are larger and higher-capacity than the V2 mini variants that have populated the existing constellation, and getting them into operational orbit is a business objective as much as an engineering one. SpaceX has filed the relevant FCC paperwork for orbital operations, and the flight also requires FAA approval before it can proceed.

The mission will stress-test a sequence of procedures that suborbital hops could never fully validate. Booster ascent, stage separation, upper-stage reentry dynamics, and the eventual splashdown all behave differently when you are actually going fast enough to orbit the planet rather than just lobbing the vehicle downrange.

The road to Flight 14

Flight 13, which flew on July 24, 2026, delivered the most encouraging results the program had seen. It demonstrated effective V3 satellite deployment and achieved a controlled splashdown, giving SpaceX the confidence and the data needed to attempt an orbital profile.

SpaceX also completed its transition to a publicly traded company under the ticker SPCX in June 2026, which adds a new layer of scrutiny to every mission outcome.

What comes next and why it matters

The V3 satellite deployment is the most immediately consequential element of the flight for SpaceX’s revenue picture. Starlink is already the company’s largest operating business, and the V3 generation is designed to expand the network’s capacity significantly.

The splashdown location, west of Chile in the Pacific, reflects the realities of a first orbital attempt. SpaceX is keeping the vehicle away from populated areas during reentry, a sensible precaution when you are doing something for the first time.

Weather, the FAA, and the vehicle itself all have veto power over the September 22 date. The 75-minute window gives some flexibility on the day but not across days.
