Spain faces injury setbacks ahead of World Cup knockout stages

Spain got the result they needed against Uruguay. They also got something they very much did not need: two more names on an injury list that was already starting to look like a CVS receipt.

Winger Nico Williams went down with a muscle injury during stoppage time of Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay on June 26, raising immediate concerns about his availability for the knockout rounds. Teammate Yeremy Pino’s situation is worse. A suspected collarbone fracture is likely to end his tournament entirely.

The wing problem

Williams had been one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking weapons. A hamstring issue picked up in the dying minutes of a match already won is the cruelest kind of injury, the footballing equivalent of twisting your ankle on the way to collect a lottery check.

And then there’s Lamine Yamal. The young Barcelona star suffered a partial hamstring tear back in April, which limited his match readiness heading into the World Cup.

Depth under pressure

The injury concerns extend beyond the wing positions. Mikel Merino, Fabián Ruiz, and Víctor Muñoz have all been dealing with various fitness issues of their own, creating a situation where De la Fuente is essentially playing personnel Tetris with pieces that keep changing shape.

What this means for Spain’s tournament run

Context matters here. Spain won the European Championship in 2024, largely on the back of the kind of wide attacking play that is now under direct threat. That tournament saw Williams and Yamal terrorize opposing full-backs with a combination of speed, skill, and the fearlessness that comes with being young enough to not know what you’re supposed to be afraid of.

The 1-0 victory over Uruguay secured Spain’s passage to the knockout stages. Knockout football is unforgiving by design, with no second chances and no opportunity to manage workloads across a group-stage schedule. Spain will enter theirs with meaningfully fewer options than they had at the start of the tournament.
