Switchboard, one of the most widely used permissionless oracle networks in decentralized finance, announced on September 19 that it is ceasing all operations effective immediately. The core team behind the project, Switchboard Technology Labs Inc., is winding down entirely, deprecating all implementations and giving users until September 25 to migrate to alternative oracle providers.
What happened and why it matters
Switchboard had been a fixture in the oracle space since roughly 2021, providing permissionless data feeds across multiple blockchains. It was particularly prominent in the Solana ecosystem but expanded to serve chains including Aptos, Sui, IOTA, and Movement.
The team pointed to several converging pressures that made continuing operations untenable. AI tools have dramatically reduced the cost of building proprietary oracles, meaning protocols that once needed a third-party service can increasingly build their own. A persistent bear market has squeezed budgets across the industry. And a growing trend toward direct partnerships between protocols and data providers has eaten into the demand for intermediary oracle networks.
Making matters worse, recent security exploits across oracle networks have eroded trust in the entire category.
The shutdown didn’t come entirely without warning. In late August 2026, Switchboard halted operations on several Move-based chains, specifically Aptos, Sui, IOTA, and Movement, around August 29-30. That disruption reportedly caused losses for multiple DeFi protocols that relied on Switchboard’s feeds. The September 19 announcement effectively extended that partial shutdown to every remaining chain.
The migration scramble
Switchboard is directing affected protocols toward two primary alternatives: Pyth and RedStone. Both are established oracle networks with broad chain coverage, though migrating oracle infrastructure is not a trivial task. It involves updating smart contracts, testing new data feed integrations, and verifying that price accuracy and update frequency meet the protocol’s requirements.
For protocols deeply integrated with Switchboard’s permissionless feed architecture, the migration involves more than just swapping one API for another. Switchboard’s design allowed anyone to create custom data feeds without gatekeeping, a feature that differentiated it from more curated oracle services. Protocols that relied on niche or custom feeds may find that their specific data points aren’t readily available through Pyth or RedStone without additional configuration.
A bigger pattern in 2026
Switchboard’s closure isn’t happening in isolation. Over 260 crypto projects have reportedly shut down in 2026, making it one of the most challenging years for project viability since the last major bear cycle.
The trend toward direct partnerships between protocols and data providers adds another dimension. Rather than routing through a generalized oracle network, some DeFi protocols are negotiating directly with exchanges, market makers, and data aggregators for proprietary feeds.
What this means for the oracle landscape
For DeFi protocols evaluating their oracle dependencies, the Switchboard shutdown is a pointed reminder about infrastructure risk. Relying on a single oracle provider, particularly a smaller one, creates a single point of failure that can manifest with almost no warning. The late August disruptions on Move-based chains demonstrated exactly how quickly oracle failures can cascade into protocol-level losses.
