The biggest tournament in Dota 2 history kicked off in Shanghai on August 13, and the first day played out almost exactly the way the oddsmakers predicted. Top-seeded teams swept or narrowly edged their opponents across the board, leaving few upsets to talk about.

TI 2026, hosted at Shanghai’s Oriental Sports Center, features 16 qualified teams competing in a Swiss-system format before the top finishers advance to the main playoff bracket. Day one’s Best-of-3 matches went largely according to script, with favorites like BoomBoys, Team Falcons, PARIVISION, and Team Yandex all picking up wins.

The marquee matchups

The most closely watched opening-round clash pitted BoomBoys against OG. BoomBoys handled it cleanly, taking the series 2-0 without dropping a map.

Team Falcons, the reigning champions from TI 2025, had a slightly bumpier ride. They took down LGD Gaming 2-1, needing all three maps to close out the series. Falcons came into this year’s event as strong contenders but not the outright favorites.

The Swiss system matches teams against opponents with similar records. Win your first match, you play another winner. Lose, and you face another team that lost. After enough rounds, the cream rises and the bottom falls out.

The key threshold is advancing to the main playoffs, which run from August 20 to 23. The top three teams from the Swiss stage will move on to compete for the Aegis of Champions.

A prize pool in progress

The current prize pool for TI 2026 sits at approximately $2.9 million. That figure breaks down to $1.6 million in base funding from Valve, with the rest coming from community contributions through in-game purchases. The International has long held the distinction of offering esports’ largest prize pools, built on Valve’s revenue-sharing model where a percentage of in-game sales flows directly into the tournament pot.

What to watch going forward

Team Falcons’ three-map struggle against LGD Gaming is the closest thing to a red flag among the favorites. The defending champions looked beatable in a way that BoomBoys, for instance, did not.

BoomBoys look like the team to beat based on the opening day’s evidence. A 2-0 sweep of OG, a historically elite organization at The International, combined with favorable pre-tournament odds makes them the consensus frontrunner heading into the second round of matches.
