Tottenham Hotspur fans see Luka Vuskovic in World Cup match against England

Most Tottenham supporters had only heard the name. On matchday in Dallas, they finally got to watch Luka Vuskovic in the flesh, lining up for Croatia against England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage.

The 19-year-old centre-back, born on 24 February 2007, has been one of European football’s worst-kept secrets for the better part of a year. His World Cup appearance just made the secret a lot louder.

From Hamburg to the world stage

Vuskovic spent last season on loan at Hamburger SV, where he did considerably more than just get minutes. He earned Bundesliga Team of the Season recognition for the 2025/26 campaign, an honor that tends to do interesting things to a player’s market value.

He made his senior debut for Croatia in June 2025, and has since become a fixture in the squad.

Playing against England, a side featuring Harry Kane, Vuskovic was operating in familiar territory. He had already faced Kane during his time in Germany, which adds a neat narrative loop to the whole affair.

Croatian football legend Darijo Srna has been vocal about the defender’s trajectory, suggesting Vuskovic has an “amazing future” ahead of him.

Tottenham says no to £30 million

Brighton and Hove Albion submitted a £30 million bid for Vuskovic, and Tottenham rejected it. Not countered. Rejected.

Current reports suggest Brighton is unlikely to come back with an improved offer in the near term.

Look, £30 million for a 19-year-old defender is already a significant sum. But the rejection implies Tottenham either believe his value is substantially higher, or they genuinely intend to integrate him into their squad. Possibly both.

What Spurs fans can expect

Earning Team of the Season honors in one of Europe’s top five leagues, while on loan, at 18 years old, is not normal. His composure on the ball, reading of the game, and physical presence have all been highlighted during his time in Germany.

For Tottenham, the calculus is straightforward. They have a teenager who just played in the World Cup, earned one of the Bundesliga’s highest individual honors, and attracted a £30 million bid that the club considered insufficient. That is not a player you let go cheaply.
