Trump threatens to seize Iran’s Kharg Island oil-export hub, rattling oil and crypto markets

1 hour ago 15

Donald Trump has declared that the US will take control of Kharg Island, Iran’s most critical oil-export terminal. The small island in the Persian Gulf handles roughly 90% of Iran’s crude oil shipments, somewhere in the range of 1.5 to 2 million barrels per day under normal conditions.

What happened

On June 11, Trump posted that the US would seize Kharg Island and assume control of Iran’s oil infrastructure. He drew comparisons to recent US actions in Venezuela, framing the move as an extension of American energy dominance.

Back on March 30, Trump threatened to obliterate Kharg Island and its oil-related infrastructure entirely if a deal regarding the Strait of Hormuz wasn’t reached immediately.

The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman through which roughly a fifth of the world’s daily oil consumption passes.

Oil markets respond predictably

Brent crude prices climbed toward $94 per barrel following the escalation. West Texas Intermediate, the US benchmark, surged above $90.

Removing 1.5 to 2 million barrels per day from the market, even temporarily, would create a supply shock that no amount of strategic petroleum reserve releases could fully offset.

Bitcoin caught in the crossfire

Bitcoin has been whipsawing in response to the geopolitical tension, trading in a wide band between $62,000 and $71,000.

No other cryptocurrencies have shown notable movements specifically tied to the Iran situation. Bitcoin remains the primary digital asset absorbing geopolitical risk sentiment.

Why this matters for investors

Oil above $90 is a tax on the global economy. It raises input costs for manufacturers, increases transportation expenses, and pushes consumer prices higher.

If Iran retaliates against threats by actually restricting passage through the Strait of Hormuz, the oil price impact would dwarf what we’ve seen so far. Brent at $94 would look cheap in a scenario where 20% of global oil transit is interrupted.
