Ukrainian drones strike Moscow region in largest overnight attack since full-scale invasion

Ukraine sent roughly 600 drones at the Moscow region overnight into August 16, marking one of the most extensive aerial assaults on the Russian capital’s outskirts since the war began in 2022. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that air defenses intercepted 201 of the unmanned vehicles, while Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed it neutralized over 800 drones across the country during the same window.

What got hit

The most visible damage occurred at a Wildberries distribution center in the Podolsk area south of Moscow. The facility, which spans 250,000 square meters, roughly the size of 50 football fields, suffered extensive fire damage.

An 83-year-old man was killed after a drone struck his private home, according to Russian officials.

Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov described the assault as one of the most substantial the region has experienced. Russian officials have threatened a fierce retaliatory response.

A pattern, not an anomaly

This attack didn’t emerge from nowhere. Ukrainian drone operations targeting Russian logistics and infrastructure have ramped up significantly throughout 2026, with notable strikes in June and July establishing a clear pattern of escalation.

Russia’s claim of destroying 822 drones nationwide during the incident, if accurate, means Ukraine launched well over 800 UAVs in a single night across multiple Russian regions.
