The United States has put weapons in space. And for the first time, it’s saying so out loud.
Air Force Secretary Troy Meink confirmed on September 14 during a keynote at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference that the US Space Force has deployed “on-orbit space control weapons” designed to protect American and allied forces from hostile actions by adversaries.
What we know, and what we don’t
Meink declined to elaborate on the specific capabilities of the deployed systems, their exact timing, or how many are currently in orbit.
What experts have been able to piece together suggests these are likely non-kinetic systems. Think electronic warfare tools or jamming capabilities rather than missiles that physically smash into enemy satellites. Kinetic anti-satellite weapons generate enormous clouds of debris that endanger every spacecraft in their orbital neighborhood. China demonstrated this problem in 2007 when it destroyed one of its own satellites and created a debris field that’s still causing headaches nearly two decades later.
The 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which the US, Russia, and China have all signed, explicitly prohibits placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit. It says nothing about electronic warfare systems, directed energy weapons, or other counterspace technologies that didn’t exist when the treaty was drafted.
Why now
Russia and China have been building counterspace capabilities at an accelerating pace, developing systems designed to jam, blind, or physically destroy the satellites that underpin everything from GPS navigation to military communications to precision-guided munitions.
Russia has tested direct-ascent anti-satellite missiles. China has demonstrated both kinetic and co-orbital capabilities. Both nations have invested heavily in ground-based laser and jamming systems that can interfere with satellites without destroying them.
The public acknowledgment also aligns with broader policy shifts under the Trump administration, which has pushed for more aggressive posturing in the space domain. The Golden Dome missile-defense initiative, a space-based interceptor program, reportedly reached “flight-ready hardware” in under a year.
Meink framed the deployment as defensive, a response to threats rather than an act of aggression.
The arms race nobody voted for
The US had previously maintained a studied ambiguity about its offensive space capabilities, neither confirming nor denying their existence. Meink’s announcement tosses that playbook aside.
Arms control experts have long warned about a space arms race unfolding without meaningful diplomatic guardrails. The Outer Space Treaty’s prohibition on weapons of mass destruction was written for an era of nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles, not electronic warfare satellites or co-orbital inspection vehicles. No treaty currently constrains the kinds of systems the US appears to have deployed.
Efforts to negotiate new space security agreements have stalled repeatedly at the United Nations, with the US, Russia, and China each blaming the others for the impasse.
What to watch
The Golden Dome program alone represents a significant new revenue stream for defense contractors. If its rapid development timeline holds, it could reshape the missile defense landscape and drive further investment in space-based interceptor technology.
