US and UK conduct first joint military operation in space, sending a message to China

For the first time in history, the United States and United Kingdom have carried out a joint military operation in space. The mission, which ran from September 4 to 12, involved a carefully choreographed rendezvous between American and British satellites in geostationary orbit, roughly 35,786 km above Earth’s surface.

The timing was not coincidental. China’s Shiyan 12-01 satellite passed approximately 83 km beneath the allied spacecraft during the operation.

What actually happened up there

US Space Command maneuvered its surveillance satellite, USA 271, into close proximity with the UK’s SKYNET 5A military communications satellite. Both spacecraft were traveling at roughly 11,000 km/h through geostationary orbit.

The operation was publicly announced on September 18, a week after it concluded. UK Space Command officials endorsed it as a “first of its kind” for their organization, while commercial tracking firms independently confirmed the satellites’ movements.

Both Slingshot Aerospace and COMSPOC, companies that monitor orbital activity using commercial tracking data, verified the location and nature of the maneuver.

The China factor

The operation falls under the umbrella of Operation Olympic Defender, a US-led multinational initiative launched in 2019 to coordinate allied space operations.

Russia demonstrated the fragility of orbital security in 2021 when it destroyed one of its own defunct satellites with a ground-launched missile, creating thousands of debris fragments that threatened the International Space Station and other assets. China conducted a similar test in 2007, generating a debris field that remains a hazard nearly two decades later.

For the UK specifically, the operation signals an expanded role in military space operations. Britain’s SKYNET satellite constellation has provided secure military communications since the 1960s. The UK Space Command was established in 2021.
