Verizon just inked a deal worth more than $1 billion with Google to light up dark fiber connecting the search giant’s data centers. The agreement, announced during Verizon’s Q2 2026 earnings call by CEO Dan Schulman, is the kind of massive infrastructure play that signals where the real money in AI is flowing: not into chatbots, but into the physical pipes that make them possible.

What dark fiber actually means

Think of dark fiber as a highway that’s been paved but never opened to traffic. Telecom companies like Verizon have vast networks of optical fiber cables sitting underground, unused. “Dark” just means no light pulses are being sent through them yet.

The Google deal activates portions of that dormant infrastructure to create high-speed, high-capacity connections between Google’s data centers. These links are critical for AI workloads, which require moving enormous volumes of data between facilities at blistering speeds. Unlike leasing bandwidth on shared networks, dark fiber gives the buyer dedicated, uncontested capacity.

The massive capital expenditure flowing into centralized AI infrastructure creates both competition and opportunity for decentralized alternatives. Projects in the decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN) space, networks like Filecoin, Render, and Akash, are essentially trying to build distributed versions of what Google is paying Verizon $1 billion to provide. Every time a centralized player locks up more dedicated infrastructure, it raises the question of whether decentralized networks can compete on cost, reliability, or access.
