Wolves pushing to sign midfielder Jordan James from Rennes

Wolverhampton Wanderers are pushing hard to bring Welsh midfielder Jordan James to Molineux this summer, with reports from early August 2026 describing the club as eager to get a deal done before the transfer window closes on August 12.

Rennes are open to selling James on a permanent basis for around £10 million, a figure that represents a meaningful profit on the roughly £4 million they paid Birmingham City to sign him in August 2024.

From Birmingham to Brittany to the Premier League

Birmingham City sold him to the French Ligue 1 side on a four-year contract in the summer of 2024, when he was still just 20 years old.

Rather than embedding him in Rennes’ first team straight away, the club sent him out on loan to Leicester City for the 2025-26 season, where he made 34 appearances and walked away with the club’s Player of the Season award.

At 22 years old, James is a central midfielder who has already accumulated Welsh international caps. Wolves manager Rob Edwards is understood to be keen on adding British players to his squad, and James fits that brief neatly.

A crowded race for James’s signature

Wolves are not the only club circling. West Ham, Middlesbrough, and Burnley have all been credited with interest, which means James has genuine options across different levels of English football.

For Rennes, the math is straightforward. They bought James for around £4 million, contracted him through June 2028, and can now sell him for roughly £10 million after a loan season they didn’t have to bankroll.

The £10 million asking price also sits in a range that multiple English clubs can comfortably reach, which is presumably why Rennes feel comfortable holding firm on their valuation rather than dropping it to accelerate a deal.

The timing is tight. The window shuts August 12, 2026, and Wolves are described as keen to finish this deal before the deadline.

No deal has been confirmed as of the reporting date, and James is said to be weighing his choices carefully.
