XRP nears golden cross as market shifts focus to altcoins

1 hour ago 15

XRP is setting up one of the more closely watched technical signals in crypto right now. As of early September 2026, the token’s 50-day simple moving average was sitting at roughly $1.197, closing in on the 150-day SMA at approximately $1.238. When the shorter average crosses above the longer one, traders call it a golden cross, and they tend to treat it as a sign that momentum has decisively shifted upward.

At the time of writing, XRP was trading near $1.33 to $1.35, having pulled back slightly from a September 8 price of around $1.39. That’s still a meaningful recovery from lows near $1.00 in August.

What the charts are actually saying

The golden cross forming here involves the 50-day and 150-day simple moving averages, which is a slightly shorter setup than the classic 50/200 crossover most textbooks describe. That distinction matters, because on the longer exponential moving average timeframe, XRP is still firmly in death-cross territory. The 50-day EMA stands at $1.2860 while the 200-day EMA sits at $1.3539, meaning the short-term average is still below the long-term one.

A prior analogous moving-average configuration preceded a rally of more than 63%, lifting XRP from roughly $2.20 to above $3.60. That historical precedent is why the current formation is generating attention rather than being dismissed as noise.

Near-term, analyst targets cluster around the $1.50 to $1.70 range as the first meaningful resistance zone. Analyst EGRAG, working from an Elliott Wave framework, has outlined a longer-term scenario pointing toward $6.19 to $8.07, though that figure sits well beyond what the near-term chart action can confirm on its own.

Altcoin rotation is doing some of the heavy lifting

XRP isn’t rallying in a vacuum. Bitcoin confirmed its own golden cross around September 8 to 9, 2026, which historically has been one of the conditions that allows capital to start rotating into altcoins.

Ripple’s broader ecosystem is also adding fundamental texture to what might otherwise be a purely chart-driven story. The company’s RLUSD stablecoin continues to expand its footprint in cross-border payments, giving XRP’s native network additional transaction volume and use-case legitimacy. Ripple has spent years building institutional rails in markets that traditional correspondent banking has historically served poorly, particularly in corridors across Southeast Asia and Latin America.

Where the risk lives

The case for caution is straightforward. A golden cross between the 50-day and 150-day SMAs is a meaningful signal, but it’s not a guarantee of follow-through. The ongoing death cross on the 50/200 EMA chart is a real counterargument, not a technicality to wave away.

If XRP fails to hold above the $1.33 range and the moving averages begin to converge back rather than cross, the setup dissolves. A failure to confirm the breakout at $1.50 resistance could push price back toward the $1.20 to $1.25 zone where both moving averages currently reside.

Volume is the variable to watch. A golden cross confirmed on thin volume is the technical equivalent of a handshake without a signature. Institutional and retail buying would need to show up in meaningful size for the crossover to translate into a sustained trend rather than a brief spike followed by retracement.
