Apple removes Telegram from App Store over child safety violations, raising fresh questions for TON ecosystem

17 hours ago 38

Apple pulled Telegram from its App Store on August 4 after discovering child sexual abuse material on the platform. The app was back roughly 90 minutes later, once Telegram deleted the offending content and banned the user responsible.

Apple enforces strict policies around child sexual abuse material, and when it found CSAM on Telegram, it did what it’s done before: it yanked the app entirely. Telegram responded quickly. The content was removed, the offending user was banned, and the app was restored to the App Store within about an hour and a half.

This isn’t the first time this exact scenario has played out. Back in 2018, Telegram was delisted from the App Store for the same reason: CSAM violations. Following that incident, the company enhanced its systems for monitoring public content, though challenges persist.

The Durov factor

Telegram’s founder Pavel Durov has become something of a lightning rod for regulatory attention. As of July 29, Durov was reported to be facing charges in Russia for allegedly aiding terrorism. That’s on top of a prior indictment in France related to facilitating illegal content on the platform.

What this means for the TON ecosystem and crypto investors

No immediate market disruption followed the brief App Store removal. No crypto tokens saw significant price movement tied directly to the incident.

Telegram isn’t just a chat app for crypto traders. It’s the primary distribution channel for TON, a blockchain ecosystem that has built its entire user acquisition strategy around Telegram’s massive user base. Mini apps, wallet integrations, token launches: all of it flows through Telegram. Apple’s App Store is the only way to get Telegram on an iPhone.

For investors in TON or any tokens distributed primarily through Telegram-based mini apps, this incident should function as a stress test preview. The platform passed this time, quickly enough that markets didn’t flinch. Investors should be watching Durov’s legal proceedings and Telegram’s content moderation track record as leading indicators, not just token prices.
