Argentina is cruising through the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an opponent path so favorable it’s rewriting the record books. The defending champions’ knockout-stage opponents have carried an average FIFA ranking of 38th, making this the strongest overall path to a World Cup semifinal in history.
Argentina’s road to the final four started with Cape Verde, ranked approximately 64th in the world. Next came Egypt, ranked around 26th. The quarterfinal picture includes either Colombia, ranked approximately 13th, or Switzerland at around 19th. The real test, if it comes, would be fourth-ranked England in the semifinals. Average it all out and you get that 38th-ranking figure. In a tournament featuring 48 teams for the first time, the expanded format has created more rounds and, inevitably, more opportunities for lopsided matchups in the early knockout stages.
