Bahia signs striker Alejo Veliz from Tottenham for undisclosed fee

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Argentine striker Alejo Veliz is leaving the club to join Brazilian side Esporte Clube Bahia. The move becomes effective on July 1, 2026.

The reported transfer fee sits around £7.8 million, roughly 9 million euros. There are also potential add-ons worth approximately £871K (1 million euros) and a 20% sell-on clause baked into the deal.

A £13 million gamble that never paid off

Veliz arrived at Tottenham in August 2023 with real hype. The club reportedly paid around £13 million to pry him from Argentine club Rosario Central, signing him to a six-year contract.

Across his entire tenure at Spurs, Veliz managed just eight first-team appearances. His lone Premier League goal came against Brighton in December 2023.

What followed was the classic loan carousel. Veliz was shipped out to Sevilla in Spain, then to Espanyol, and eventually back to his former club Rosario Central in Argentina.

Why Bahia makes sense

Bahia is owned by the City Football Group, the same sprawling conglomerate behind Manchester City, Melbourne City, New York City FC, and a growing constellation of clubs across the globe.

Bahia finished seventh in the most recent Campeonato Brasileiro and ranks favorably in expected goals metrics, suggesting they create genuine chances for their attackers.

From Tottenham’s perspective, recovering roughly £7.8 million plus potential add-ons from a player who contributed essentially nothing to the first team is a reasonable outcome. They’re eating a loss of several million pounds on their initial investment, taking roughly a 40% haircut on the deal. The 20% sell-on clause gives Spurs a speculative financial stake in Veliz’s future.
