Banco Bradesco SA just told the market it plans to raise up to 10 billion reais, roughly $2 billion, with backing from its top investors. The capital increase is designed to fuel the Brazilian banking giant’s ongoing digital transformation, which increasingly includes blockchain infrastructure, stablecoin pilots, and crypto asset custody.
What Bradesco is actually building
Bradesco, Brazil’s second-largest private-sector bank by assets, has been assembling a crypto and blockchain playbook over the past several years.
In January 2025, the bank partnered with Parfin, a digital asset infrastructure firm, to pilot stablecoin-based cross-border payments and trade settlements.
Reports from May 2026 indicate Bradesco is preparing to launch digital asset custody services covering both crypto assets and stablecoins.
The bank is also deeply involved in Brazil’s Drex CBDC pilot program, the central bank’s initiative to build a wholesale digital currency for the country. Bradesco has been collaborating with other major institutions, including Banco do Brasil and Itau, to explore use cases like collateralized credit on blockchain rails.
Bradesco’s blockchain experiments date back to 2016, when it joined the R3 consortium and began running digital wallet trials.
Why this matters for crypto markets
The Drex pilot is worth watching closely. If Drex moves from pilot to production with Bradesco as a key participant, it creates a template that other central banks in the region could replicate. That has implications for stablecoin issuers like Circle and Tether, who might find themselves competing not just with each other but with sovereign digital currencies that come pre-integrated into the banking system.
What investors should watch
The Parfin partnership is a useful signal. Parfin specializes in institutional-grade digital asset infrastructure, so Bradesco choosing them as a partner suggests the bank is serious about building production-ready systems rather than just running proofs of concept in a sandbox.
The digital asset custody play is potentially the most consequential piece for crypto markets specifically. Institutional custody has been a bottleneck for adoption in Latin America, where regulated options remain limited compared to the US or Europe. A bank with Bradesco’s balance sheet and regulatory standing offering custody services could unlock institutional capital that has been sitting on the sidelines.
Bradesco’s blockchain experiments started a decade ago, and only now is the bank moving toward production custody services. Competitors born in the crypto ecosystem, like Mercado Bitcoin or Bitso, have been offering these services for years.
