Barcelona has reignited its interest in Bournemouth’s 20-year-old French striker Eli Junior Kroupi, positioning him as the club’s leading alternative if their pursuit of Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid falls through.
The Kroupi play
Kroupi moved from French club Lorient to Bournemouth in February 2025 for £10 million, a relatively modest sum by Premier League standards. He then scored 13 goals in 35 appearances during his first full season on the south coast.
Reports from July 25-26, 2026 indicate Barcelona has come knocking, only to be turned away. Bournemouth reportedly rejected initial inquiries, making clear that Kroupi is not available for transfer at this time.
Why Álvarez is still the main target
Julián Álvarez remains Barcelona’s top priority this summer. The Argentine forward, currently at Atlético Madrid, reportedly has a notable offer from Barcelona still sitting on the table as of mid-July 2026. But negotiations appear to have stagnated.
At 20, Kroupi fits Barcelona’s well-documented preference for younger players who can be developed within their system. His Premier League-proven goal record makes him a credible Plan B. If Álvarez comes through, great. If not, they’re not scrambling in late August.
The financial calculus and what it signals
Álvarez would presumably command a premium transfer fee from Atlético, likely in the range that would test Barcelona’s spending limits. Kroupi, while no longer the £10 million bargain Bournemouth got from Lorient, would almost certainly come at a lower price point.
Bournemouth’s rejection could drag this out through the summer window. If Barcelona ultimately fails to land Álvarez and has to come back to Bournemouth with a more serious offer, the English club’s negotiating leverage only grows.
