Barcelona submits bid to host 2029 UEFA Champions League final at renovated Camp Nou

FC Barcelona has formally submitted its bid to host the 2029 UEFA Champions League final, putting the club’s massive stadium renovation project at the center of one of European football’s most coveted hosting opportunities. The bid dossier was delivered to UEFA in early June 2026, just ahead of the submission deadline around June 10-11.

The venue in question is the renovated Spotify Camp Nou, which will boast a capacity of 104,600 spectators upon completion. That would make it the largest stadium in Europe, a fact Barcelona is clearly banking on as a differentiator in the selection process.

A bid backed by every level of government

The bid has secured institutional backing from the Spanish government, the Government of Catalonia, the Barcelona City Council, and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

Barcelona first declared its interest in hosting on February 3, 2026, giving the club roughly four months to assemble its formal bid package.

The competition: Wembley looms large

Barcelona’s primary rival in the bidding process is Wembley Stadium in London. Wembley has a capacity of 90,000, which gives Camp Nou a meaningful edge in raw seating numbers.

Madrid is already set to host the 2027 Champions League final. UEFA is scheduled to announce its decision on September 15, 2026.

Camp Nou’s renovation: the elephant in the room

The Spotify Camp Nou overhaul is designed to modernize every aspect of the venue while expanding capacity to 104,600. Camp Nou has hosted the Champions League final twice before, in 1989 and 1999.

What this means for investors watching the sports-crypto intersection

FC Barcelona maintains a commercial partnership with cryptocurrency exchange WhiteBIT, part of the broader trend of crypto firms sponsoring major football clubs. However, there is no indication that this partnership has any connection to the Champions League hosting bid.
