Centrifuge, the decentralized protocol best known for bringing real-world assets onto blockchain rails, has floated a proposal that would let CFG token holders convert their tokens into equity or equity-like instruments in the underlying entity. The proposal is currently in a 14-day comment period on Centrifuge’s governance forum, seeking community feedback before any formal vote takes place.
What Centrifuge is actually proposing
CFG token holders would gain the option to convert their tokens into equity stakes, or at least equity-like instruments, in the entity behind Centrifuge. Right now, the proposal sits in the RFC (Request for Comments) phase. There’s no confirmed vote date and no implementation timeline. The 14-day window is purely for gathering community input, after which the Centrifuge governance process would move toward a more formal decision.
CFG currently serves as the sole governance and value-accruing token for the entire Centrifuge protocol. Following its migration to Ethereum’s EVM architecture, the total supply sits at approximately 675 million tokens. Earlier governance discussions within the Centrifuge community noted that there is no distinct equity or business entity separate from the utility of the CFG token itself. This new proposal would formalize a pathway between the two worlds.
The compliance question looms large
The proposal signals that compliance requirements like KYC (Know Your Customer) and AML (Anti-Money Laundering) verification would likely be necessary for anyone looking to participate in the conversion process.
Why this matters beyond Centrifuge
Centrifuge focuses on bringing off-chain assets like invoices, real estate, and other financial instruments onto blockchain infrastructure, making them accessible to DeFi lending and liquidity pools. A token-to-equity conversion would push that intersection further, transforming CFG from a governance token into something closer to a token that represents a real economic claim.
Given that CFG is the only mechanism for governance within Centrifuge, token holders’ collective voice during the 14-day comment period will determine whether this proposal advances to a formal vote or gets sent back for rethinking.
