Como signs Barcelona’s Andrés Cuenca for €700K in deal that highlights football’s evolving investment math

Serie A club Como 1907 has agreed to sign teenage centre-back Andrés Cuenca from FC Barcelona for €700,000 plus a 20% sell-on clause. Cuenca, a Spanish defender born in June 2007, joined Barcelona’s legendary La Masia academy in 2019 and made his senior debut during the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League campaign. He’s set to officially join Como on July 1, 2026, with a contract running through June 2030.

The sell-on clause is the real story

A €700K transfer fee for a teenager from Barcelona’s academy is modest in modern football. The player’s market value sits around €500K, making this a slight premium. The 20% sell-on clause means Barcelona retains future upside exposure on a player they trained: if Cuenca moves for €10 million in future, Barcelona would receive €2 million. The sell-on clause functions as a form of passive income generation, turning player development into retained financial exposure on graduates who leave the club.

Como’s ownership and the globalization of football capital

Como 1907 is majority-owned by the Indonesian Djarum Group through Sent Entertainment, controlled by the Hartono brothers. Under head coach Cesc Fàbregas, the former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder turned manager, Como has pursued a strategy of acquiring young talent with high developmental upside following the club’s promotion to Serie A in 2024. Cuenca fits that template: a pedigreed academy product available at a fraction of what established players cost. Advanced talks on the deal were reported in January 2026.
