Cristian Orozco to undergo medical ahead of Manchester United transfer

Manchester United are set to complete the signing of Colombian defensive midfielder Cristian Orozco, with the 17-year-old traveling to England on Sunday to undergo his medical and put pen to paper on a formal agreement.

The deal, worth $1M, brings Orozco from Colombian club Fortaleza CEIF to Old Trafford, completing a process that actually started back in September 2025 when the two clubs first reached a preliminary agreement.

Why it took this long

Orozco was born on July 13, 2008, meaning he turns 18 in July 2026. That birthday is the key date. FIFA rules generally prohibit international transfers of players under 18, so United had to agree the deal in September 2025 and then simply wait.

With Orozco now approaching that milestone birthday, the club has moved quickly to get the medical completed and the signing formalized before the 2026/27 season gets underway.

Who exactly is Cristian Orozco

Orozco is a defensive midfielder. His first-team record at Fortaleza CEIF is modest by any measure: two starts and two substitute appearances, with no goals or assists to his name.

What has caught the attention of United’s scouting network is Orozco’s representation at Colombia’s U17 level, a signal that the Colombian football federation views him as one of the country’s better young prospects at his age group.

The $1M fee is essentially option money. For a club operating at United’s financial scale, spending $1M on a teenager with genuine upside is closer to a development wager than a significant transfer outlay.

United’s pattern with young South American talent

Orozco will slot into United’s academy and development setup for the 2026/27 season, working within the club’s training environment rather than being thrown into first-team contention immediately.

The September 2025 preliminary agreement is worth noting as a detail in itself. United identified Orozco, locked in the deal, and then managed the process quietly over several months while Orozco continued at Fortaleza CEIF.
