The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially got underway in Atlanta on June 15, with the tournament’s opening matches marking the start of what might be the most crypto-integrated sporting event in history.
This isn’t just a bigger World Cup. It’s a fundamentally different one, expanded to 48 teams and 104 matches, co-hosted across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. And for the first time, a crypto exchange has an official seat at the table.
Kraken gets the keys to the World Cup
On June 9, Kraken was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the FIFA World Cup 2026. That title is a first for the tournament, which has historically kept its sponsorship roster stocked with traditional finance brands and consumer goods companies.
The deal gives Kraken activation rights across all 16 host cities, including Atlanta.
The Avalanche blockchain runs FIFA’s digital infrastructure
FIFA’s digital collectibles and ticketing systems operate on what the organization calls the FIFA Blockchain, built on Avalanche’s network. The infrastructure handles Right-to-Ticket NFTs, which function as purchase rights for World Cup match tickets.
Thousands of RTT NFT transactions were processed ahead of the tournament’s opening day.
Separately, Panini is rolling out blockchain-based digital trading cards during the tournament. Specific drops are planned throughout the tournament’s duration.
Fan tokens and the Chiliz play
Fan tokens for national teams, including Argentina and Brazil, are already trading on the Chiliz blockchain via Socios.com. These tokens typically give holders voting rights on minor team decisions and access to exclusive content.
A projected global audience of over six billion viewers creates an enormous funnel of potential new users.
Meanwhile, Solana-based meme tokens tied to the tournament have also started appearing. None carry any official FIFA endorsement.
Notably, FIFA itself has not issued an official token for the 2026 World Cup.
What this means for crypto investors
The crypto infrastructure around this World Cup touches several distinct assets. AVAX benefits from being the backbone of FIFA’s digital platform. CHZ is the native token of the Chiliz blockchain powering fan token trading. Kraken’s involvement raises the profile of centralized exchange participation in global sports sponsorship.
For traders, the 104-match schedule creates a prolonged window of potential catalysts. Every knockout round, every upset, every penalty shootout can move fan token prices in real time.
