Inter Miami wants Kevin De Bruyne. Again. The MLS club has renewed its interest in the Belgian midfielder, banking on the idea that a move to South Florida, and a potential reunion with Lionel Messi, might eventually prove too tempting to resist.
There’s just one problem: De Bruyne doesn’t seem interested in leaving Europe yet.
The discovery rights play
Inter Miami holds De Bruyne’s MLS discovery rights, a mechanism unique to the league that grants a club first-negotiation privileges when a player abroad decides to make the jump stateside. The club has held these rights since at least April 2025, effectively planting a flag before any competitor could.
They’re not the only ones circling. Chicago Fire, NYCFC, and D.C. United have all reportedly expressed interest in the former Manchester City playmaker. But discovery rights give Inter Miami pole position, which in MLS transfer mechanics is roughly the equivalent of having the only key to a locked door.
In English: if De Bruyne ever decides to come to MLS, Inter Miami gets to talk to him first.
The Napoli factor
Here’s the thing. De Bruyne signed with Napoli after his Manchester City contract ended, reportedly earning a base salary of around €6.5 million plus bonuses. That’s not exactly a retirement package. It’s a deal that signals competitive ambition, not a sunset clause.
The Belgian has expressed a preference to stay with the Italian club, where his contract runs through 2026. For Inter Miami, that timeline is both a frustration and an opportunity. A frustration because it means no immediate move. An opportunity because contracts do expire, and 2026 isn’t exactly a lifetime away.
