Iran mourns Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as funeral begins today

The state funeral of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader for 37 years, began today in Tehran. It marks the culmination of months of delay, political upheaval, and a war that killed him in the first place.

Khamenei, aged 86 at the time of his death, was killed during US-Israeli airstrikes at the outset of the 2026 Iran war. Iranian state media confirmed his assassination around late February to early March. The funeral was originally planned for March but got pushed back for an obvious reason: the country was under active bombardment.

A funeral four months in the making

The ceremonies, running from July 3 through July 9, span multiple cities including Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad. Iranian authorities have closed streets and airspace in Tehran, anticipating tens of millions of mourners across the multi-day event.

Khamenei will ultimately be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on July 9. The scale of the funeral is reportedly the largest in Iranian history.

What crypto markets did when the news broke

When confirmation of Khamenei’s assassination hit the wires in early March, Bitcoin rebounded to approximately $68,000 on or around March 1, following confirmation of Khamenei’s death.

Iran has been one of the more active state-level users of cryptocurrency for sanctions evasion. Estimated crypto flows involving Iran reached approximately $1.7 billion in early 2026.

What this means for investors

If a successor regime moves toward diplomatic engagement with the West, the need for sanctions-evasion channels diminishes. That could actually reduce Iranian crypto volumes, which at $1.7 billion was a meaningful flow. Conversely, if the conflict intensifies and sanctions tighten further, expect those flows to grow as Iran leans even harder on decentralized financial rails.

The Bitcoin rebound to $68,000 in March demonstrated that digital assets are now firmly in the category of instruments that respond to geopolitical catalysts.
