Meta is planting its first AI data center flag in India, and it’s doing so with the country’s most powerful conglomerate as its landlord.
The social media giant has struck a deal with Reliance Industries Limited to develop a 168 MW AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. Reliance will build the facility, and Meta will lease it.
What the deal actually looks like
Reliance is handling the heavy lifting here: design, construction, connectivity, and end-to-end services for the facility. Delivery is expected within two years.
The data center will incorporate renewable energy sources, which matters when you’re talking about 168 megawatts of power consumption.
This isn’t a cold start between the two companies. Meta and Reliance formed a joint venture back in August 2025, committing approximately Rs 855 crore (around $100 million) to develop Llama-based enterprise AI solutions.
Mark Zuckerberg expressed pride in collaborating with Reliance to establish the facility, framing it as a symbol of the deepening relationship between the two companies.
Reliance’s bigger AI infrastructure play
The Indian conglomerate is advancing plans for $11 billion in AI data centers across India. The crown jewel of that ambition is a 1 GW-scale project in Jamnagar, the same city where Meta’s facility will sit.
Reliance isn’t just working with Meta either. The company has been pursuing partnerships with Brookfield and Digital Realty to scale its AI capabilities for both domestic and international clients.
Why India, why now
India is Meta’s largest market by user count. The country has more Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp users than any other nation. Yet until now, Meta has relied on data centers located elsewhere to serve that massive audience.
For Reliance, locking in Meta as a long-term tenant for a major data center provides revenue visibility and validates the broader $11 billion infrastructure bet.
