MetaMask Adds Scam Warnings and Transaction-Reversion Protection

1 hour ago 13

MetaMask announced on September 14 new protections for romance and investment scams, showing contextual prompts and alerts immediately before users send funds. The system uses Blockaid checks to identify malicious destination addresses across supported EVM networks and is live in MetaMask Mobile version 8.11 and later and MetaMask Extension version 13.48 and later, according to the company’s announcement.

A separate MetaMask mechanism is intended to reverse transactions when execution differs from the preview; the company also offers a paid product with coverage for eligible losses.

Blockaid-powered prompts target romance, investment and unfamiliar-recipient transfers

MetaMask said the new prompts present contextual questions and alerts before funds are sent, targeting potential romance and investment scams.

According to MetaMask, Blockaid-powered checks flag malicious destination addresses. The feature is available across all EVM networks on the specified MetaMask Mobile and MetaMask Extension releases.

Warnings for lookalike wallet addresses and transfers to first-time recipients are also included, Decrypt reported. They are intended to prompt additional scrutiny for unfamiliar recipients or addresses that resemble another wallet address, rather than operate only as a known-address blocklist.

Added Protection addresses execution that differs from the preview

MetaMask’s Added Protection is separate from its address-focused warnings and reportedly reverts a transaction if its executed result differs from the transaction preview shown to the user, Decrypt reported.

That distinction is about timing and function. Scam prompts address the destination and circumstances of a proposed transfer before sending; Added Protection instead checks the eventual on-chain result against the preview.

Its initial rollout was limited to MetaMask’s browser extension, with mobile support planned, according to Decrypt. By contrast, the Blockaid-backed scam-warning feature is available on both the extension and MetaMask Mobile.

Transaction Shield puts a $9.99 monthly price on eligible-loss coverage

MetaMask says its optional Transaction Shield costs $9.99 a month and provides up to $10,000 in monthly coverage for eligible transactions. The product is separate from MetaMask’s scam-warning feature and Added Protection, which reverts transactions when their executed results differ from previews, according to Decrypt.

MetaMask’s Transaction Shield page describes the $10,000 as coverage for eligible transactions, so it is a monthly maximum subject to that condition.

Transaction Shield is currently available on Extension rather than Mobile. The scam-warning feature is live on both surfaces, while Added Protection launched first on Extension with mobile support planned, according to Decrypt.

MetaMask cites $7.2 billion in 2025 U.S. investment-scam losses

The new protections arrive against a backdrop of large reported losses tied to crypto investment scams. MetaMask cited FBI data showing $7.2 billion in U.S. losses from crypto investment scams in 2025.

The figure appears in the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center’s 2025 annual report. It provides the scale behind MetaMask’s emphasis on warnings that appear at the transfer stage, particularly in scams where a victim may be persuaded to send funds to an unfamiliar address.
