Metaplanet starts first-tranche Bitbonds offering in Japan with 4% yield

Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed company that has essentially become Japan’s answer to MicroStrategy, is moving forward with its Bitbonds offering. The product carries a 4% interest rate and is designed to do exactly what you’d expect: raise capital to buy more Bitcoin.

Project Nova and the Bitbonds blueprint

Metaplanet has been laying the groundwork for this moment through what it calls Project Nova. The project’s entire purpose is to create Bitcoin-backed financial instruments aimed at Japanese investors.

A critical piece of the puzzle fell into place when Metaplanet acquired brokerage firm Siiibo Securities for approximately ¥2.1 billion, roughly $13 million. That deal closed in June 2026, and the brokerage has since been rebranded as Metaplanet Securities.

The acquisition gave Metaplanet a Type-1 securities license, which is required in Japan for structuring and distributing financial products like bonds.

On July 10, 2026, the company announced a partnership with yen stablecoin issuer JPYC and tokenization platform Progmat. The collaboration is focused on developing credit products and bonds backed by Bitcoin, with on-chain settlement infrastructure as a core component.

The numbers behind Metaplanet’s Bitcoin bet

By early July 2026, the company held approximately 43,000 BTC, valued at nearly $2.8 billion.

The 4% yield on the first tranche sits at the lower end of analyst projections, which have estimated Bitbonds could offer between 4-6% returns, according to a July 27, 2026 report.

What this means for investors

Investors watching this space should pay attention to the actual issuance volume of the first tranche, the institutional versus retail split among buyers, and whether the JPYC-Progmat on-chain settlement infrastructure actually goes live or remains aspirational. No Bitbonds product has officially launched; the initiative remains in an exploratory study phase with no confirmed issuance timelines.

The collaboration with Progmat is particularly noteworthy. Progmat is a tokenization platform backed by major Japanese financial institutions. Its involvement signals that Metaplanet’s Bitbonds aren’t being treated as a fringe crypto experiment but as a legitimate evolution of Japan’s tokenized finance initiatives.
