Physical Superintelligence raises $58M to build AI-powered physics research lab

A company called Physical Superintelligence just raised $58 million in seed funding to build what it describes as the world’s most advanced AI-native physics research laboratory. The round was led by Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Bill Gates’ climate-focused fund, with participation from Dragon Global, Solari, and individuals connected to OpenAI and NVIDIA.

What PSI actually does

Physical Superintelligence, or PSI, emerged from stealth as a public benefit corporation based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company was founded by CEO Matt Pines, President Alex Klokus, and Chief Scientist Dr. Alexander Wissner-Gross.

The team currently includes over 25 researchers with backgrounds at institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Stanford.

At the center of PSI’s work is a platform called Emmy, which the company describes as a network of “virtual physicists.” Emmy is designed to generate hypotheses, run complex simulations, and analyze physics-related research problems.

Data centers first, Alpha Centauri later

PSI’s first commercial application is focused on optimizing AI data centers, specifically improving power management, cooling efficiency, and network performance.

The project that will get the most attention is the Fermi Explorer Mission. PSI has signed on as the founding technical partner for what would be the first privately funded endeavor to design an interstellar probe targeting Alpha Centauri, our nearest neighboring star system at roughly 4.37 light-years away. The mission is budgeted at less than $15 million and is expected to begin by the end of 2029.

The team and the thesis

The public benefit corporation structure means PSI has a legal obligation to consider the impact of its decisions on stakeholders beyond shareholders. PSI has framed this as a commitment to deploying AI systems “grounded in verifiable physical principles for the greater public good.”
