S&P Global is reportedly exploring a potential multibillion-dollar spinout of Capital IQ, its widely used financial data and analytics platform. Capital IQ, commonly referred to as CapIQ, is a core product within S&P Global’s Market Intelligence segment, sitting alongside tools like Visible Alpha and integrated datasets from With Intelligence.
A company already in restructuring mode
S&P Global completed the spin-off of its Mobility division into an independent publicly traded entity, Mobility Global Inc. (NYSE: MBGL), on July 1, 2026. In that transaction, each S&P Global shareholder received one share of MBGL for every share of SPGI they held as of June 15, 2026.
That separation prompted S&P Global to recast its financial reporting and release updated segment information on July 6, 2026, followed by Q2 2026 results on July 28, 2026.
Recent moves suggest deepening, not divesting
On July 29, 2026, the company announced the integration of expanded private markets datasets from With Intelligence into its Capital IQ Pro platform. Leadership changes and new operating models within the Market Intelligence segment have also been oriented toward innovation and internal restructuring, not separation.
As of early September 2026, no credible evidence has emerged to support claims regarding the potential spinout of CapIQ. No announced plans exist for a spinout or separation of CapIQ or the Market Intelligence Platforms business.
The financial data landscape is shifting
S&P Global’s merger with IHS Markit in 2022 was one of the defining deals of that era, creating a data powerhouse valued in the hundreds of billions. CapIQ’s potential competitors as a standalone entity would include Bloomberg Terminal, Refinitiv (now part of the London Stock Exchange Group), and FactSet.
The counterargument is equally straightforward. CapIQ benefits from its integration with S&P Global’s proprietary datasets, credit ratings, and index data, advantages that would be harder to replicate through arm’s-length licensing agreements.
