Sheffield United in advanced talks to re-sign Kalvin Phillips on loan from Manchester City

Sheffield United are deep in negotiations with Manchester City to bring Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane on loan. The Championship club is pushing for a season-long deal this time, a significant upgrade from the brief February arrangement that gave Phillips barely enough time to unpack his boots.

Phillips, now 30, joined Sheffield United on loan from City back on February 2, 2026, for the tail end of the 2025-26 campaign. He managed just three appearances during that stint.

Before landing at Sheffield United in February, he spent the earlier portion of the 2025-26 season on loan at Ipswich Town, where he racked up 19 appearances. He still has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad.

One notable detail about the proposed arrangement: it does not include a buy option. Sheffield United want Phillips for the season, but they’re not committing to anything beyond that.

The bigger picture for Phillips and City

With two years left on his deal, City face a familiar calculus. They can keep loaning Phillips out, subsidizing his wages while hoping his value stabilizes enough for an eventual sale. Or they can accept a cut-price permanent transfer. The absence of a buy option in this Sheffield United deal suggests neither side is ready for that conversation yet.
