Trump Media pivots away from Bitcoin after $360M in digital asset losses

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Truth Social, is pulling back from its cryptocurrency ambitions after racking up $360.6 million in digital asset losses during the first half of 2026. The company, which aggressively expanded into Bitcoin and other tokens throughout 2025, is now doing what corporate strategists politely call a “strategic realignment” and what everyone else calls cutting your losses.

TMTG posted a net loss of $238.1 million in the second quarter of 2026 alone, with the bulk of the damage coming from unrealized markdowns on its crypto holdings. The firm still holds 9,477 BTC valued at roughly $557.1 million as of June 30, but that’s a far cry from the $836 million those same holdings were worth earlier in the year.

The crypto experiment unravels

TMTG’s foray into digital assets was supposed to be a diversification play. Throughout 2025, the company built up a substantial Bitcoin treasury and amassed roughly 756.1 million CRO tokens, the native cryptocurrency of the Crypto.com exchange. Those CRO holdings were valued at just $40.6 million as of the end of June.

On August 7, 2026, TMTG, Crypto.com, and investment firm Yorkville formally terminated their proposed CRO Strategy deal and ETF partnership. The collaboration, which was meant to create a cryptocurrency treasury vehicle and launch exchange-traded fund products, was scrapped due to what the parties described as unfavorable market conditions.

New leadership, new direction

The pivot comes under the watch of interim CEO Kevin McGurn, who appears to be steering the company toward a more conventional media business model. The plan now centers on monetizing Truth Social, the social media platform that remains TMTG’s core product, potentially through the introduction of paid features.

The CRO token exposure adds another layer of concern. Holding hundreds of millions of altcoin tokens introduces concentration risk that goes well beyond Bitcoin’s volatility profile. When a company’s altcoin positions decline to the point where 756 million tokens are worth barely $40 million, it raises questions about the due diligence behind the original investment.
