The Nevada deployment represents Waymo’s inaugural entry into the state. Operations commence with an initial fleet of several dozen autonomous vehicles, with expansion plans following the initial rollout phase.

Prior to Waymo’s arrival, Las Vegas had hosted just a single robotaxi provider offering commercial passenger services. Amazon-backed Zoox initiated paid rides in the entertainment capital last month, becoming the market’s pioneer operator.

Waymo’s Nevada fleet utilizes the company’s most advanced sixth-generation autonomous driving platform. These vehicles are manufactured using Zeekr’s automotive platform and carry the Ojai brand designation.

Following a February funding round that brought in $16 billion, Waymo achieved a $126 billion valuation. The autonomous vehicle company now completes over 500,000 self-driving trips weekly throughout its American service areas.

Recent weeks saw Waymo announce additional growth plans covering Denver, San Diego, and Tampa, supplementing operations already established throughout California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona.

Japanese Market Entry Scheduled for 2027

Beyond domestic growth, Waymo is pursuing its first international commercial deployment. The company aims to introduce fully autonomous taxi services in Tokyo by 2027, representing Japan’s inaugural driverless passenger transport offering.

Strategic alliances with GO, Japan’s leading taxi-hailing application, and established operator Nihon Kotsu will facilitate the Tokyo launch. The beginning phase will deploy a limited fleet, gradually expanding toward approximately 100 vehicles.

Road testing of autonomous technology in Tokyo has been underway since 2025. These trials have concentrated on calibrating systems for Tokyo’s characteristically narrow roadways and congested traffic patterns.

Japanese regulations currently mandate human driver presence in autonomous vehicles, regardless of automation capability. The planned 2027 commercial launch hinges on obtaining necessary regulatory clearances.

Japanese riders will access Waymo’s service through both GO’s established platform and Waymo’s proprietary application. Nihon Kotsu will manage on-ground operations while GO incorporates the autonomous service into Japan’s existing taxi infrastructure.

Japan’s demographic challenges, including workforce contraction and taxi driver shortages, position the country as a potentially lucrative market for autonomous transportation solutions.

Competitive Landscape Intensifies

Waymo faces mounting competition in its global expansion efforts. American startup Nuro has initiated Tokyo testing programs through collaborative arrangements with Uber and Lucid Group. Nuro counts Nvidia and Toyota among its financial backers.

Within domestic markets, Amazon’s Zoox continues challenging Waymo’s position, while Tesla advances its proprietary autonomous vehicle initiatives.

Wall Street maintains a Strong Buy consensus on Alphabet shares, reflecting 24 Buy recommendations against four Hold ratings on TipRanks. Analysts’ mean price objective of $425.88 suggests potential appreciation of 21.9% from present trading levels.

Through the current year, Alphabet stock has posted gains of 11.8% according to recent market data.
