World Liberty Financial, the DeFi platform with deep ties to the Trump family, has named Ryan Ballantyne as its new chief business officer. His mandate: steer global strategy and partnerships for a platform that’s quickly becoming one of the most politically charged experiments in decentralized finance.
Ballantyne arrives from Coinbase Institutional, where he built a track record in institutional sales.
What WLFI is building
World Liberty Financial launched in 2024, founded by a group that includes Zachary Folkman, Chase Herro, Alex Witkoff, Zach Witkoff, and members of the Trump family. The platform has moved quickly since then, assembling a product suite that looks less like a typical DeFi startup and more like a fintech company with blockchain infrastructure.
The centerpiece is USD1, a stablecoin that has grown to roughly $4 billion in market capitalization. USD1 currently operates across multiple chains, including Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and Tron, giving it broad reach across DeFi ecosystems.
Then there’s the WLFI governance token itself. It sits at approximately $1.74 billion in market cap, with around 31.8 billion tokens in circulation out of a maximum supply of 100 billion.
The family retains 75% of net proceeds from specific token sales.
Why the Coinbase connection matters
Ballantyne’s background in institutional sales is the connective tissue for what WLFI wants to do next. The platform has publicly discussed plans for institutional treasury solutions, essentially positioning USD1 as a tool that corporate treasurers and financial institutions might use for settlements, reserves, or cross-border payments.
The platform has also floated the idea of applying for a national banking charter.
The political dimension
The Trump family’s involvement makes WLFI a lightning rod in ways that purely technical DeFi projects never are. The 75% revenue share flowing to the Trump family also raises governance questions, as a structure where the founding family captures three-quarters of certain proceeds sits uncomfortably with DeFi’s philosophical roots.
