American Arbitration Association launches Web3 Panel for crypto disputes

1 hour ago 17

The American Arbitration Association, the largest alternative dispute resolution provider on the planet, just carved out a dedicated team of arbitrators for the crypto industry. The new Web3 Panel, launched on July 29, brings together specialists in blockchain, smart contracts, digital assets, tokenization, decentralized systems, and something the AAA is calling “agentic commerce,” which is essentially what happens when AI agents start making transactions on their own.

Who’s on the panel and why it matters

The initial roster reads like a deliberate blend of legal heavyweights and tech insiders. Dr. Kabir Duggal from Akin Gump brings international arbitration experience. David A. Hoffman from the University of Pennsylvania adds academic rigor around contract law and digital governance. Rich Widmann comes from Google Cloud, offering the kind of technical fluency that traditional arbitrators typically lack. Paula Pendley rounds out the founding group.

The broader infrastructure play

This isn’t the AAA’s first foray into blockchain territory. The organization previously developed a framework for smart contract and blockchain dispute resolution, and the new panel builds on that foundation. But the timing is notable for another reason: the AAA is simultaneously working on something called the Legal Context Protocol.

The Legal Context Protocol is an effort to create standards that govern AI-agent-driven transactions. The AAA is collaborating with major tech companies including Google, IBM, and Circle on this initiative.

The focus areas for the Web3 Panel cover contract formation and interpretation in decentralized environments, governance disputes, asset control questions, cybersecurity incidents, and cross-border enforcement.
