Atlético de Madrid signs Morten Hjulmand, and its fan token ecosystem is worth watching

1 hour ago 10

Atlético de Madrid just locked down Danish midfielder Morten Hjulmand on a five-year contract running through June 30, 2031. The deal, worth a reported €40 million base fee with up to €5 million in performance-related add-ons, brings the former Sporting CP captain to La Liga as part of Diego Simeone’s squad refresh ahead of next season.

The deal itself

Hjulmand, 27, spent his recent seasons captaining Sporting CP in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. He completed medical tests and finalized the contract in early July 2026, giving Atlético a battle-tested midfielder for both La Liga and European competition.

Atlético’s crypto footprint is bigger than you think

Back in 2019, Atlético became the first Spanish football club to launch on Socios.com, the fan engagement platform built on the Chiliz blockchain. The ATM fan token that resulted gives holders voting rights on minor club decisions and access to exclusive rewards.

Then in July 2024, Atlético partnered with Kraken, the major US-based cryptocurrency exchange, as the club’s Official Crypto and Web3 Partner. That deal put Kraken’s branding across Atlético’s stadium and digital properties.

What crypto investors should actually watch

First, watch how Atlético deploys its Kraken partnership. If Kraken and Atlético collaborate on token-gated content, exclusive NFT drops tied to player milestones, or blockchain-based ticketing, that would be a genuine catalyst for the club’s digital asset ecosystem.

Second, keep an eye on regulatory developments in the EU. European regulators have been increasingly scrutinizing fan tokens, questioning whether they should be classified as financial instruments rather than utility tokens. Any reclassification could significantly impact how these assets are marketed and traded.
