NextEra and Brookfield reportedly planning $100B data campus in Kentucky

1 hour ago 22

NextEra Energy and Brookfield are reportedly teaming up to build a $100 billion data campus in Kentucky, a project that, if confirmed, would rank among the most ambitious digital infrastructure bets ever placed on American soil.

The AI power problem is getting expensive

NextEra Energy, one of the largest utility companies in the US, has been aggressively positioning itself as the power provider of choice for the data center boom. The company announced a partnership with Google Cloud in December 2025 and has laid out plans to build 15 gigawatts of new power generation capacity for data centers by 2035. For context, 15 gigawatts is enough to power roughly 11 million homes.

Brookfield, meanwhile, has been quietly assembling one of the world’s largest data center portfolios. The firm operates campuses through its Compass and Data4 platforms, managing over 1.6 gigawatts of contracted capacity. Brookfield’s leadership has been blunt about what’s holding back AI growth: electricity availability is the primary bottleneck.

Why Kentucky makes more sense than you’d think

Land costs are significantly lower than in traditional tech hubs like Northern Virginia or Silicon Valley. Energy costs have historically been competitive, partly thanks to the state’s coal and natural gas resources. And crucially, Kentucky offers something that’s becoming increasingly rare: available power capacity that isn’t already spoken for.

The crypto and digital asset angle

Bitcoin miners have increasingly found themselves competing with AI companies for the same power resources, a competition that has pushed some miners to pivot toward becoming general-purpose data center operators. Companies like Core Scientific and Hut 8 have already made this transition, converting Bitcoin mining facilities into AI computing hubs.

Brookfield has a significant focus on green energy infrastructure, and NextEra is the world’s largest generator of renewable energy from wind and solar. Investors should watch for official confirmation from both NextEra and Brookfield. Until then, the project remains in rumor territory.
