A Russian frigate reportedly fired warning shots at a sailing yacht in the English Channel, according to Sky News. As of June 16, 2026, no verified reports exist confirming this incident, and extensive searches through established news sources reveal no corroborating media coverage.
A week of confrontations in the Channel
On June 14, UK Royal Marines boarded the Russian oil tanker Smyrtos in a six-hour operation, marking the first time British forces had directly intercepted a Russian vessel in these waters.
The boarding involved coordination between the Royal Navy frigate HMS Sutherland and Royal Air Force air assets, all part of ongoing sanctions enforcement tied to the Ukraine conflict.
The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich has been reported escorting oil tankers through the English Channel earlier in 2026.
A pattern of disputed warning shots
In 2021, Russia claimed it fired warning shots at HMS Defender in the Black Sea. The UK flatly denied any shots were fired. In 2024, a similar incident involving a Norwegian fishing vessel followed the same playbook: Russia says shots were fired, Western sources dispute the account.
The alleged yacht incident in the English Channel would be notably different from those prior cases in one important respect. The Black Sea and Arctic waters where previous incidents occurred are at least in the neighborhood of Russian territory or contested zones. The English Channel sits between the UK and France, two NATO members.
Sky News had previously aired speculation in late 2025 about potential UK military responses to Russian spy ships operating near British waters. The Smyrtos boarding on June 14 turned that speculation into action.
